In the first experiment, fluid which had been detected by ultrasound in the uterine lumen of a mare in oestrus was re-examined by ultrasound at 10 minute intervals after the i.v. administration of 5 iu oxytocin. The fluid was expelled from the uterus via the cervix over a 50 minute-period. In the second experiment, 15 pony mares (217 to 392 kg bodyweight) were examined daily through 18 oestrous periods by ultrasound and were mated or inseminated on the day ovulation was detected (day 1) or within 48 hours before ovulation. Oxytocin was administered daily for 2-4 days between day -1 and day +4 and the mares examined +12 till pregnancy or return to oestrus. The doses of oxytocin used were 5 iu i.v. 10 iu either s.c. or i.v. The overall conception rate was 67%. Five of the mares had fluid imaged in the uterus and were treated with antibiotic on one day; 4 of them became pregnant.
