Cefotaxime therapy for serious infections

Cefotaxime is safe and effective for the treatment of serious bacterial infections due to susceptible microorganisms. Of particular interest are the excellent clinical results obtained in the treatment of bacteremia, pneumonia, biliary sepsis, urinary tract infections and bone-joint infections. Cefotaxime was highly effective in the treatment of infections due to gram-positive cocci such as pneumococci, as well as in those due to the highly susceptible strains of Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonadacae. It is unclear whether cefotaxime will be useful as a single agent in the treatment of infections due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
