One of the first recorded surgeons in Huddersfield (Yorkshire) was William Wilks, whose long life covered a period of remarkable change. When Wilks was born, in 1770, George III was on the throne, America was still a British colony and Henry Venn, friend of John Wesley, had just resigned as Vicar of Huddersfield. When Wilks died, in 1840, Victoria was Queen, the Industrial Revolution was under way, in spite of the activity of the Luddites, and the railways had arrived.
