Gn-RH analogs and benign prostatic hypertrophy

For many years the benefits of surgical castration for treatment of benign prostatic hypertrophy have been observed, however, this treatment approach has not found great popularity due to its potential for provoking psychological and behavioral trauma. With the development of Gn-RH (gonadotropin releasing hormone) analogs, a new treatment approach for benign prostatic hypertrophy through suppression of testicular hormone secretions has arisen. Gn-RH analogs can be used effectively for treatment of benign prostatic hypertrophy to a limited extent in cases with serious urinary symptoms and in those cases in which surgery is not advisable. The therapeutic effects of treatment are reduced within 3-6 months and vary from subject to subject. Treatment should not exceed six months, particularly if no clinical improvement is observed. Side effects should also be considered when evaluating treatment efficacy.
