Changes in menstrual bleeding caused by the use of the IUD

It were studied 319 women participating in a Volunteer Birth Control Program carried out at the Mexican Institute of Social Security to quantify changes of the menstrual bleeding caused by the use of 11 different types of intrauterine devices (IUD). The results showed that the IUD which increased in a constant and important manner the amount of bleeding (more than 80 ml) were the Lippes D and the TCu 380. The IUD TCu 200, 220 C and ML-250 increased the menstrual bleeding in a mild form reaching less than 80 ml. The copper 7 produces a light and not significative increment. In the case of the T which liberates progesterone or progestins (Nor 8, Nor 2, Net 10), all of them have as a common effect a significant decrease in the quantity of the menstrual bleeding (93.6% of the control value) particularly in the case of women using T which liberates 8 .mu.g of Levonorgestrel.
