Paragonimiasis: an infrequent but treatable cause of hemoptysis in systemic lupus erythematosus

A 28-year-old woman from Mexico, was admitted because of haemoptysis and chest pain of 15 days duration. Nine years before, a diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus had been made and the patient was treated during a 3-year period with variable doses of prednisone and azathioprine with good response. During the 6 years preceding the current illness, she had been asymptomatic, using nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs or aspirin, when required. Paragonimus sp. was diagnosed and she was treated with praziquantel (oral dose, 75 mg/kg bwt daily for 2 consecutive days). Eight months after the treatment was administered she was asymptomatic.
