The way in which Indian nutritional scientists and policy planners have influenced the formulation and interpretation of standards of nutritional state is examined, from the context of observations of Indian dietary, growth and health conditions. Evidence is examined on the validity and applicability of nutritional standards to India; the so-called protein gap; and the 'small but healthy' hypothesis. Indian scientists are shown to have influenced at least one major area of scientific policy debate, and to have had considerable influence in international nutrition and food policy debates. The roles of cultural and political-economic factors in national and international nutritional standards are emphasized.
