Assessment of nutritional status by anthropometry: a comparison of different standards of reference

Anthropometric data collected in a survey of 318 subjects (212 with inflammatory bowel disease and 106 healthy subjects; 191 females, mean age 43; 127 males, mean age 43; age range, 18-75) were analyzed according to Jelliffe's reference standards and according to Frisancho's 1981 centile categories, in order to compare the data distribution by each method. This intercomparison did not reveal consistent agreement in the resultant distributions developed by these 2 methods, both within and between sexes. Hence, it is important that any nutritional asessment study clearly state which reference method is employed. The anthropometric data included mid-arm and mid-arm muscle circumferences, and triceps skinfold thickness. (wz)
