A one-year study on the role of the support worker in the ward health care team is reported. The brief was to investigate a number of districts chosen on the basis of interesting staffing patterns. The study gave a useful indication as to how future research into skill mix might be carried out, and showed that attention must be given by management to the workforce planning problems faced by ward staff.
