A d-Norgestrel slow-releasing T intrauterine device was evaluated in 100 women over a 6-month period. There were no pregnancies and no removals for side effects. Menstrual pattern and flow were not markedly changed. The release rate of d-norgestrel from silicone rubber tubes was studied in vivo and in vitro. The average in vivo release per month was 224.4 mcg with capsules of an effecitve length of 34 mm and 72 mcg with capsules 12 mm long. The uptake of tritiated d-norgestrel in the blood plasma and in the genital organs and fat was estimated in 2 women. The contraceptive effect of d-norgestrel is definitely local.
