[Regional differences of household formation in Japan

This paper evaluates indexes of household composition and household formation, and examines the availability of these indexes. First, Itoh evaluates 11 indexes on household composition and formation. 2 indexes could no longer be used because the related data from censuses were not available due to changes in census questionnaires. 1 index had been developed into several indexes, and 1 was very difficult to use because the related tables were dated. The author found that the nuclear family is most prevalent in the southwestern part of Japan and in Japan's metropolitan areas; the stem family system is most prevalent in the northeastern part of Japan and in the sea side of the western part of Japan.
