This paper presents a comprehensive case study examining a local radio operation in Ecuador which was harnessed to the social and economic development of a community. After an introduction dealing with the theories of radio as a development tool, the paper focuses on the use of radio for development in Ecuador. Although formal evaluation of Radio Bahai is lacking, it is known that the station is 'a favourite' in the rural areas, largely because of its folk music and public service features. This provides a platform for launching health, agriculture and craft programmes and enables the marginalized Indian population to participate in radio programmes.
