The treatment of arthropod bites and stings, and preventive measures that should be taken against causative arthropods, are briefly discussed with particular reference to the outdoor leisure environment in North America. Apidae (honeybees), Vespidae (hornets, wasps and yellowjackets), haematophagous Diptera (mosquitoes, gnats and other biting flies), fleas, ticks, chigger mites and the brown recluse spider [Loxosceles reclusa] are mentioned.
