This chapter reviews the biological consequences of rural urban migration for human populations. It begins with a description of the extent of migration today and in the past. This discussion leads into a consideration of the possible consequences of living in the urban environment on human biology. The following section divides the information on rural urban migration into four areas: (1) growth and development, (2) fertility and demography, (3) morbidity and mortality, and (4) the biology of the rural non-migrating population. The issue of biological selection of urban migrants is discussed, as appropriate, in each of these areas. Finally, a tentative explanation for the patterns of biological change and adaptation to the urban environment is offered.
