This maxim, formulated in 1687 by Sir Isaac Newton in his Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica, is one of the fundamental principles of science. Biological systems, such as the human body, are more complicated than the simple physical systems Sir Isaac was describing. Nevertheless, this maxim helps us understand why the trials of new therapies for sepsis have failed.
