Norplant contraceptive implants were inserted into 437 Indonesian women aged 18-40 years of diverse educational backgrounds from May 1 until Aug. 31, 1981. The continuation rates for use of the implants at the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th year were 96%, 92%, 88%, 82%, and 78%, respectively. Bleeding problems were the most common cause for removal of the implant. The cumulative 5-year net pregnancy rate for Norplant was 1.8 pregnancies/100 women. The Norplant contraceptive system appears to combine the highest acceptability as measured by its continuation rate with the highest long-term effectiveness among the available temporary contraceptive methods.
