Within 3-4 weeks control of Myriophyllum spicatum was excellent but 2, 4-D did not seriously affect other submerged plants nor zooplankton, phytoplankton, benthic macroinvertebrates and fish. 2, 4-D DMA appears to be a non-cumulative herbicide in that only small amounts are translocated along and through food chains. Plankton sorbed large amounts and retained it for extended periods. Finished drinking water from municipal treatment plants on occasion contained 2, 4-D.
