Examination of a one-year-old Welsh cob colt found in a lateral recumbency at pasture showed marked tremor of the triceps muscle moderate pyrexia, slight but persistent tenesmus grinding of teeth and a pulse of 55 beats/minute. There was also a marked cardiac murmur, fixed dilated pupils and examination of the head resulted in short periods of hyperexcitability. The colt was treated with low doses of detomidine and butorphanol and walked into a stable. During the next 24 hours it has periods of relative normality and bouts of excitability usually followed by prolonged recumbency and semi-narcosis. The colt gradually weakened and the creatine phosphokinase level increased to 1 million iu/litre. The colt was destroyed 48 hours after the initial consultation. PM findings were unremarkable. Large numbers of small fungi identified as being of the genus Psilocybe were present in the pasture.
