Prednisolone and danazol for treatment of immune-mediated anemia, thrombocytopenia, and ineffective erythroid regeneration in a dog

Immune-mediated anaemia and thrombocytopenia were diagnosed in a 8-year-old spayed Miniature Schnauzer presenting with a 3-week history of progressive anorexia and weakness, sporadic vomiting, diarrhoea and reduced exercise tolerance. The initial (BC) revealed poor erythroid regeneration and concurrent leukopenia. The results of a Coombs test and ANA (antinuclear antibody) titre were strongly positive. Examination of a bone marrow specimen revealed erythrophagocytosis and a maturation arrest in the erythrocytes. Treatment with transfusion plus prednisolone and danazol (attenuated androgen) stabilized the haematocrit and resulted in development of reticulocytosis.
