A number of problems relating to infant feeding and infant health in Dharavi, Bombay, India was examined. Among the main problems were: the low level of female education and literacy; the difficulty in improving the health of infants while living conditions remained so poor; insufficient ante- and post-natal health care; most mothers discarding colostrum for pre-lacteal feeds; late introduction of supplementary foods; and very high levels of malnutrition among the infants. Suggestions are given for combating these problems.
