Scopoletin as a trace constituent of compounded feeds and the lack of an association with the haemorrhagic bowel syndrome in the pig

Fifteen samples of the commercial pig feeds, fed during an outbreak of the haemorrhagic bowel syndrome, were analysed for scopoletin; 4 samples contained 0.05 to 0.13 ppm and 8 other samples 0.08 ppm or less. These results were suggestive and a feeding experiment was therefore carried out; the 'outbreak dose' of scopoletin was calculated and up to 1,000 times this dose was fed daily. The results were negative which appears to refute the suggestion that scopoletin is associated with the haemorrhagic bowel syndrome.
