Pathogenesis of chronic copper poisoning in lambs

Of 215 weanling lambs accidently fed swine premix instead of lamb premix for five weeks, 46 (21%) died. The first death occurred 23 days after feeding of the toxic diet (containing 150-170 ppm Cu) commenced, and the last death 40 days later (19 days after withdrawal of the diet and its replacement by a mouldy maize meal). Most of the deaths (83%) took place after feeding of the mouldy maize meal had commenced. The symptoms and gross and histological lesions are described (six photomicrographs). The Cu content of the liver and urine of dead lambs was 850-1100 ppm and 62 ppm dry matter, respectively.
