Malaria at Johannesburg Hospital. A retrospective study

A total of 43 patients (32 male and 11 female, median age 30 years, range 3-66 years) diagnosed as having malaria were admitted to Johannesburg Hospital, South Africa, during 1988; 40 were infected with Plasmodium falciparum, one was infected with P. vivax and one with P. ovale, and in one patient the type of malaria was not identified. Only 26 patients were recorded as having used prophylaxis of any kind; chloroquine alone and in combination was used as prophylaxis by 17. Patients were treated with quinine (alone or in combination) in 67% of cases. In 42% of patients, chloroquine-resistant malaria was considered a possibility.
