Resolution of cavitary Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia

The authors comment on the progress of a patient who they had recently reported (New York State Journal of Medicine (1988) 88, 652-653) as having P. carinii pneumonia (PCP) and who had presented with multiple pulmonary parenchymal cavitations. The patient began to show roentgenographic improvement of her pulmonary process during her prolonged hospital stay. Following discharge, she was reluctant to have further radiological examinations. 15 months after her initial presentation with PCP, she returned with complaints of weakness and dyspnoea on exertion. She was found to be markedly anaemic. Her chest roentgenogram was free of infiltrates or cavities. She underwent transfusion and was discharged for outpatient follow-up.
