Mutants resistant to different doses of streptomycin were isolated from cultures of strains which were effective for nodulation and streptomycin-sensitive. Some mutants lost their virulence. Transformation of streptomycin resistance resulted in avirulence when strains were treated with DNA isolated from streptomycin-resistant, non-infective cells.
