Streptomycin-resistant enterobacteria and vibrios were able to transfer their resistance to heterologous sensitive bacteria by transformation process which appeared as central growths of the transformants in the in situ test system. A linkage of the str A gene transferred from Escherichia coli AB1157 to the ero locus in the new host was established. The frequencies of transformation to streptomycin-resistance of recipient bacteria varied between 10-4 and 10-6. These transformants could then act as donor and transfer their resistance to other bacteria. These evidences showed that the growth of donor bacterium or its DNA is essential for transformation in situ, which also helped in excluding the possibilities of mutation or phenotypic adaptation as alternatives to transformation.
