In conclusion, it is clear to me from reviewing this data that antihistamines and expectorants provide no measurable relief for patients suffering from the common cold. Since antihistamines have the potential to cause harmful effects, the risks associated with their use outweigh any meager benefit. It is my opinion that these drugs should be removed from all nonprescription products promoted for the relief of cough and cold symptoms. This recommendation, of course, does not apply to products promoted solely for the relief of allergy symptoms.
