L. STOUT reports that since 1959 pear decline has killed or weakened 1, 000, 000 trees in the State. An aerial survey of lucerne fields was carried out in Imperial and Riverside Counties to find patches of lucerne root rot caused by Phymatotrichum oninivorum. Birch rust (Melamp-soridium betulinum) was found on only 28 trees (in 2 counties) and serious economic losses from it are considered unlikely. E. A.
