The population and family planning statistics for China, annually between 1988-91, are presented in as single table. Demographic indicators include the following: year end population, crude birth rate, crude death rate, rate of natural increase, births, proportion of first parity births and second parity and higher births, total fertility rate, women of childbearing age, adopters of contraceptive methods, contraceptive prevalence rate, acceptors of child certificates, proportion of only-child certificates accepted, and proportion of deferred marriages. Statistics on contraceptive acceptors is differentiated by type of method: male sterilization, female sterilization, IUD pills, condoms, spermicides, and others. The number of birth control operations is considered separately for male and female sterilization and IUD insertions. Increases in 1991 were reported for population, the crude death rate, proportions at first and second parity births, women of childbearing age, contraceptive adopters, contraceptive prevalence rate, and child certificates accepted. Increases were evidenced for all methods accepted except the IUD, pills, and other method categories.
