Cow milk protein as a cause of infantile colic

Infantile colic is well known as a symptom in infants with cow's milk protein intolerance. In 1982 our first study was published, indicating that cow's milk formula could be a cause of infantile colic. Recently the results of another study have been accepted for publication. Twenty-seven term-born, Swedish infants aged 2 to 12 weeks (mean age 6.4 weeks), fed a cow's milk-adapted formula, were admitted during a period of 6 months, because of infantile colic according to definition. Clinical examination showed a group of well-nourished infants without diarrhea and with no signs of infection. Eighteen of the 24 infants reacted with colic when challenged with capsules containing whey protein. Two infants reacted on placebo capsules and four showed no reaction on either capsule. The crying time was significantly longer after whey protein capsules than after placebo capsules.
