From 1981 to 1986, the surgical department of the Tyumen Hospital, USSR, dealt with 104 cases of jaundice, 100 of which were cases of mechanical jaundice and were associated with Opisthorchis infection in 49 patients. The fluke infection was the main cause of obstruction in 17 patients and was associated with another disease in 32 patients. The most common causes of jaundice were choledocholithiasis (58 cases), duodenal papilla stenosis (23) and cancer (12) which were associated with opisthorchiasis in 23, 17 and 7 patients respectively. The diagnostic and surgical strategies used are discussed.
