The physical features of Rwanda and Burundi are discussed with particular reference to altitude, and lists are given of the 18 species and varieties of Anopheles occurring in Rwanda and the 19 occurring in Burundi (22 in all), with indications of which are major or secondary vectors of malaria and which are not known to transmit it. A list is also given of the localities in which Anophelines are known to occur, and the species that have been recorded from each are indicated. The distribution of the different species is shown on maps, and altitude and vegetation maps are included. A. funestus Giles and A. gambiae Giles occur at altitudes up to 1, 700 rn and are responsible for cases of malaria that have been found at 1, 900 m and above, as the Africans whose dwellings are at the latter altitudes become infected mainly when cultivating the marshes at the foot of the hills on which they live.
