The Coordinated Action Programme for the Advancement of Population Education (CAPAPE) was formed by UNESCO in 1977. The project was intended to assist member states in the setting up of population-related educational projects and comprised, firstly, a series of studies on the contribution of population education to educational innovation and renewal, and secondly, a series of sociocultural case studies for population education bearing on the formal and informal processes through which children, teenagers and adults alike acquire, in differing geo-cultural situations, population-related knowledge, attitudes, values and beliefs. In this, the second series of studies, the CAPAPE programme presents a research outline to serve as a methodological guide for inquiry into sociocultural conditions based on four case studies in areas which are representative, to a large extent, of the diversity of the situations prevailing in English-speaking and French-speaking Africa (Rwanda and Tanzania); in the Arab world (Morocco), and in Latin America (Peru).
