This chapter examines rural women's problems of time budgeting and agricultural production in eastern Uganda. It focuses on the effects of drudgery and time limitations on women's contribution to the agricultural sector and outlines possible remedies for the plight of these women. The government of Uganda recognizes the importance of the role of women in agriculture and in development in general. A Ministry of State for Women in Development has been set up recently. Its major objective is to integrate women into the development of the nation. The Ministry however, needs relevant data on women's activities as a basis for policy formulation, ultimate decision making, programme and project identification and implementation for the improvement of conditions for women, especially in the agricultural sector. A Rural Women's Credit Programme has been instituted through its chain of banking outlets in rural areas. The scheme is intended to help women to acquire credit without collateral, enabling women to open small businesses in rural areas as well as assisting in large-scale agricultural production.
