The complexity of Zambia's socio-economic circumstances and the rapid process of change, problems encountered and means being used to try and solve them are discussed. The dualistic nature of the economy dates from early in the country's colonial history. Decisive changes in the economic and social systems since independence (1964) are discussed. The Zambian way to economic independence is defined in the concept and execution of "humanism" and in the preservation and organization of a "mutual aid society"; problems involved in putting this philosophy into practice are examined.
