Issues associated with the development of health services in India are discussed. While 80% of India's population live in rural areas, 80% of the health budget is allocated to urban centres. Women, who are the traditional providers of health care find that the system is not geared or sensitive to their needs. Studies reveal that increases in the number of health personnel and hospital beds may not ensure health care for women and their children. A number of programmes have been launched to improve the nutritional status of women and children, particularly during pregnancy, and the Family Planning Programme aims to help women control their fertility.
