The first of these papers sets out to determine the existence of relationship between the early recollections of 90 older adults residing in a selected midwest agricultural university community and their leisure attitudes. Participation patterns were also examined relative to early recollections and leisure attitudes. Results did not indicate a significant relationship between early recollection and attitude to leisure or participation. A significant positive relationship existed between attitude scores and participation scores; but no identified antecedent emerged. The second paper reviews earlier theories of para-social relationships in childhood and old age. The analysis utilizes data from a study of communication activity by the elderly residents of two domiciliary care facilities in New York City. The study incorporates two surveys. This was done to facilitate comparisons of sex in the analysis. The sample is not representative of all older adults - typically characteristics were: over age 75, minimally educated, childless, unmarried, white, living alone and little visited. Results point to the possibility of using television as a therapeutic tool.
