The cystine-lactose electrolyte deficient (CLED) of Mackey and Sandys (1966) gives excellent results when used for routine urine culture, but some difficulty was experienced in differentiating colony characteristics, especially in mixed cultures of lactose and nonlactose fermenting organisms. The addition of Andrade's indicator enhances the colonial appearance and aids in identification of organisms, both in mixed and pure culture.
