Cholesterol and coronary heart disease, the pathophysiology of, treatment of and future developments in familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) are discussed. It is stressed that adopting a healthy diet is insufficient adequately to lower serum cholesterol in a person with FH who has a high blood cholesterol due to an inborn error of cholesterol metabolism rather than a diet high in saturated fat.
