Presence of nerve terminations in the episclera of the horse and ass

The episclera of horse and ass is provided, just like in the bovine, with both vegetative and sensitive somatic innervation. The former is constituted by isolated or grouped ganglionic cells located along the course of the nerve bundles. The sensitive nervous component consist, above all, of encapsulated receptors such as Pacini, Pacini-like and Golgi-Mazzoni corpuscles. Most of these are Pacini-like receptors which also show some structural features. In fact they are very small and supplied with a thin capsule and an undivided expansional axon.
