Hb values and bowel habits were studied in 1173 men and nonpregnant women 16 to 65 years old in a typical village in the Punjab, and 24-h stool specimens from 185 of them were examined for intestinal parasites and fat content. There were 296 persons of high, 776 of intermediate and 101 labourers of very low economic status. For the 3 economic classes daily intakes were of energy 4000, 2500 and 1800 kcal, protein 100, 57 and 49 g, fat 78, 70 and 40 g and Fe 23, 18 and 13 mg.
