Romania has considerable tourism potential with many resources lying close to major sources of demand in a country which is undergoing rapid modernization. Substantial investment in tourist facilities of an international standard since 1965 have been complemented by a very positive attitude on the part of the Romanian people towards both foreign and domestic tourists. The Romanian tourist industry is large although its growth, like its present geography, has been uneven. Despite thoroughly inadequate statistical coverage, there are indications that tourism is of considerable importance as regards employment, patronage and international economic exchanges. There is undoubted potential for further growth and a clear economic case for expansion of the industry can be made, with good prospects of a revival over the longer term. The persistence of a Stalinist regime to the very end of the 1980s clearly worked to the disadvantage of Romanian tourism since foreign visitors were discouraged by heightened security. Increasing liberalization will obviously be beneficial in this regard. In contrast, political change might depress domestic travel through a surge of interest in foreign travel. As yet, the future of the Romanian tourist industry remains very uncertain.
