Specific binding of 35S-TBPS was examined in synaptosomal membranes of rat cerebral cortex. Various CNS depressants enhanced allosterically both on and off rates of TBPS binding to the convulsant sites of the GABAA receptor chloride ionophore complex. Presumably they facilitate the opening of the chloride channels.
