Effect of enalapril on ambulatory blood pressure, renal hemodynamics and cardiac function in essential hypertension

The results of this study show that enalapril, in a dose of 20 to 40 mg, administered in monotherapy on a once-daily basis, effectively lowers office and ambulatory blood pressure in patients with mildtomoderate essential hypertension, but has no effect on blood pressure variability. The blood pressure reduction is accompanied by a reduction in peripheral resistance and no significant increase in either cardiac output or heart rate; global cardiac performance is not altered. Furthermore, enalapril has beneficial effects on renal hemodynamics and salt handling, which may contribute to the blood pressure lowering effect.
