For establishing the effectiveness of the preparation of chenodeoxycholic acid (Chenofalk, Grunenthal GmbH) in doses of 15 mg/kg daily for dissolving bile calculi 26 patients with calculosis were studied (2 men and 24 women, mean age 45 years). The therapeutic effects were evaluated carrying out oral cholecystography aa intervals of 6 months. In 3 cases the treatment was discontinued after 2-3 months in view of the side effects. The administration of the preparation Chenofalk during 12 months in 23 cases of cholesterol calculi caused dissolving of concrements in 15% of cases, reduction of concrement size in 61%, and regression of abdominal symptoms (pain) in 88% of cases. Chenofalk in a dose of 15 mg/kg daily played an important role in the treatment of selected cases of cholesterol calculi. This method of treatment may be proposed to patients not giving consent to surgical treatment or those in whom surgical treatment is fraught with a high risk.
