Omeprazole, the gastric proton pump inhibitor, was given at a dose of 20 mg once daily to 2- Thai patients with endoscopically proven duodenal ulcer. The healing rates were 15/20 (75%) at 2 wk and 20/20 (100%) at 4 wk. The rapid healing was accompanied by a striking effect on symptoms, nearly half of the patients becoming pain-free within the first 24 h of treatment. No important clinical or biochemical side effects were observed. Omeprazole would thus appear to be a very effective new drug for the short-term treatment of duodenal ulcer, most patients healing within 2 wk at a dose of 20 mg once daily.
