Growth in length was studied in 369 severely malnourished children with a mean age of 12.6 months treated in the Tropical Metabolism Research Unit, University Hospital of the West Indies, Jamaica, during a 10-year period from 1974 to 1983. Weight and length were measured on admission and at intervals, daily for weight, weekly for length and on discharge after a mean length of stay of just under 2 months.
