Chemical analysis and histological studies show skeletal and postural defects caused by Mn deficiency to be associated with a reduction in tissue mucopolysaccharide content. Chondroitin sulfate is the mucopolysaccharide most affected by Mn deficiency. The observations may be explained by a generalized requirement for Mn2+ by many glycosyltransferase enzymes including those needed for chondroitin sulfate synthesis.
