The surgical management of hepatoma: a review of 29 hepatic resections

The results of hepatic resection for the treatment of primary hepatocellular carcinoma is presented. A total of 59 patients were referred to the University Department of Surgery, Singapore General Hospital over the period January 1981 - December 1985 for hepatic resections and of these 29 (49.1%) patients were deemed resectable during laparotomy. Almost all of our patients with late disease and average tumour size after resection was 13.3 cm. Post operative mortality was 6.9% and post operative morbidity was acceptable. Our patients are closely monitored in the intensive care unit and complications were quickly dealth with. The survival post resection was improved and long term survivals beyond 2 years was 40.7% and beyond 4 years was 18.5%. We emphasize the early detection of this common malignancy in our country will go towards improving the resection rate and thus better and longer survival.
