In 1975-85, acute non-lymphocytic leukaemia was diagnosed in a total of 118 patients in the department of haemotology, Finseninstitutet. About 20 per cent of these patients did not receive intensive antileukaemic therapy. Some patients (16/118) were too ill from complicating infections or haemorrhage to receive specific chemotherapy and died within a few days of admission. Other patients (8/118) had e.g. heart disease and received low-dose chemotherapy. Complete remission (CR) was, however, not obtained in these patients. In 94 patients with an age range from 17-81, median 60 years treated with intensive chemotherapy by protocol, CR was obtained in 57 per cent, and 11 patients were long term survivors with an observation of 2-10 years in CR.
